Purposeful Eats.

Tucked away in a corner in Louisville, Kentucky where most people never venture is a little neighborhood that has seen its fair share of hardships: Portland. The crime rate is what is noticed in the media, but there are good things happening there by good people.

meet kathie.

As you walk into the restaurant you will either be greeted by a friendly smiling woman or hear her infectious laugh. Kathie, a mother of three, along with her husband moved their family into the neighborhood from a safe, suburban community in the 1990's to help revitalize the neighborhood by working with the community. Since then she has loved on the children in the community in an after school program and supported many adults as they walk through the recovery process. Now she volunteers her time at The Table, a "pay what you can" restaurant, which her, her husband, and a good friend opened in the fall of 2015 in the Portland neighborhood.

Born in: PeeWee Valley, Kentucky Lives in: Louisville, Kentucky Tell everyone about The Table: The Table is a non-Profit entrepreneur endeavor that seeks to offer healthy food options in a community designated a food desert. We are committed to providing healthy food at affordable pricing through our pay what you can concept. We believe everyone has a right to eat healthy and everyone has something to offer in exchange for their food. If you don't have money you can pay with your time by volunteering in the restaurant. Favorite dish on the menu: Pork sandwich on the jalapeño bun with Parmesan fries and a strawberry asparagus salad. Favorite part of volunteering: I get to meet lots of people; people from all walks of life. Everyday is different but the one constant is the joy that comes from serving. Our customers are our friends and most of them volunteer so how cool is that we get to work and serve together. A lot of people come to The Table because they like the concept and the mission. I believe most are pleasantly suprised by the good food and the relaxed ambiance. We want folks to feel welcomed and to enjoy the flavor of our community. There's no place I'd rather be than serving at The Table. What is the one lesson you hope your children learn from you: The one thing I hope my children have gotten from me is the importance of laughter. Laughter is good for the soul. I love to laugh. Laughter makes people smile. For more info on The Table visit: tablecafe.org/
