Important Vitamins to take during and after pregnancy

This post is sponsored by Viactiv, but like always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

During pregnancy the baby gets all of its nutrients from mom. Prenatal vitamins are a great source to ensure that baby is getting important nutrients but not every prenatal has all necessary nutrients and vitamins that a growing baby needs.

Here is a list of important vitamin supplements to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

1. Calcium

Your growing baby needs calcium to build strong bones! Did you know that your body cannot make calcium? So we have to make sure that during pregnancy we get at least 1,300 mg of calcium. Even after pregnancy if we are breastfeeding we need to continue to take calcium because our body loses bone mass because it is not producing enough estrogen.

Of course we can find those in dairy foods such as milk and yogurt, but I love knowing that I have gotten all I need for the day by taking a supplement. My favorite are Viactiv Soft Chews. Viactiv Chews come in chocolate and caramel and taste like a sweet treat rather than a chalky vitamin. Take two of these yummy chews and not only do you get your daily dose of calcium, but also vitamin K and D.

2. Iron

While pregnant you will need more than the daily recommended iron. Iron is essential in supporting additional red blood cells which help grow the placenta. Iron also prepares a pregnant woman for the blood loss that can occur during delivery. I did not take iron during my first baby and needed a blood transfusion because my body had lost too much blood. So make sure to take your iron.

3. DHA

DHA is a type of fat that helps with the growth and development of the baby. Especially brain development. Not only does it support brain development but it also supports vision development. Many prenatal vitamins have DHA in them now, but always double check.

You can also find DHA in certain foods such as orange juice and eggs.

4. Folic Acid Folic Acid is a necessary nutrient for your growing baby. It helps the body produce more blood that your body needs during pregnancy. It can also help prevent birth defects of your baby's brain and spinal cord. Make sure to take 400 mcg a day. Foods that contain folic acid are leafy greens, beans, pasta, and citrus foods.
