Free Celebrity Chef Derby Event at Macy's

This post is sponsored by Everywhere Agency on behalf of Macy’s; however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

I am half Mexican and half German.

Though I am biracial I was not fortunate to grow up biculture.

I never got to experience a Quinceañera or real Mexican cuisine as a kid. I never looked like anyone on the German side of my family and always longed to reconnect with my father's side. I wanted to know who I was, where I came from and who I looked like?

I finally did when I turned 24.

Thanks to the internet and calling a lot of people with my fathers last name I found a woman who was once married to my uncle. From there I have met aunts, uncles, cousins and have been embraced by such a large welcoming and warm family. Eating my grandmothers famous tortas and menudo made me feel even closer to my family and culture.

If only they lived closer!

Fast forward to now and I have my own son. He's only 16 months old and loves quesadillas: corn tortillas with white American cheese. And as I was making these for him one afternoon I thought to myself, "I want him to know more of his culture than I did!" I immediately thought that I can show him more of our culture by learning how to cook my families famous cuisine.

But who would teach me these recipes since no one lived close to me?

I reached out to my uncle Mundo and asked if he had any cookbooks from our area of Mexico: San Jose De La Paz. He immediately geared me towards Chef Rick Bayless. Yes. My Mexican uncle said that Chef Bayless is the real deal and would have authentic Mexican recipes that I could learn. Torta recipes that rival my grandmothers!

So you couldn't believe my excitement when I heard that Chef Rick Bayless and our wonderful local chef Anthony Lamas were doing a prederby event with th Culinary Council at the Oxmoor Macy's in Louisville, Ky on May 3rd, 2017.

The event is free to attend and if you RSVP you will receive a $10 gift card to Macy's. But the real gift is being able to meet Chefs Rick Bayless and Anthony Lamas and learn their best kept secrets and enjoy delicious food and drink. And for me, to thank them personally for helping me find my culture for myself and my son through the cusine of my family.

Head here to RSVP to this free Derby event on May 3rd at 6pm at the Oxmoor Malls Macy's!
